Preventive Dentistry

If we could share one important fact with our patients about preventing dental conditions and having great oral health, it would be this:

Stay on top of preventive dental care.

Coming in for regular dental exams, cleanings, and x-rays is a great way to protect your smile.

Unfortunately, many people put off necessary care until a problem arises. In dentistry, if your tooth hurts, it usually means your condition is already pretty advanced. Regular dental exams allow us to detect problems early, often before pain or the risk of losing a tooth.

Comprehensive Dental Exams

A comprehensive dental exam is about more than just looking for cavities, though that is certainly part of what we do! We look at your teeth, gums, and bite and perform an oral cancer screening in order to monitor your oral health.

If we see something, like a cracked tooth or gum disease, we will alert you right away and provide solutions to restore your health.

We also look for signs of teeth grinding, which can ruin even the most beautiful smile if left untreated. Signs such as premature wear, bite marks, and bony growths under the tongue (called tori) can indicate that you might be grinding your teeth in your sleep. A nightguard is a good way to prevent damage from a teeth grinding habit.

Diagnostic Digital X-Rays

X-rays are an essential part of preventive dentistry because they allow us to see what is not visible with the naked eye. We can identify signs of decay, infection, and certain tumors or cysts as well as detect changing bone levels all by using dental x-rays.

Our x-rays are digital and extremely low in radiation, making them a safe way to protect your health.

For patients who have a history of decay or who have deep grooves in their teeth, we offer two ways to fight against decay in addition to regular dental cleanings:

Fluoride treatments – Fluoride strengthens your enamel, keeping it strong.
Dental sealants – Sealants create a barrier between bacteria and your teeth.

Professional Dental Cleanings

Each person is different, and we customize your dental cleanings to meet your needs.

If you have your teeth cleaned regularly, you may only need a standard dental cleaning, called a prophy, to remove any tartar that has collected on your teeth along with a polish to remove surface stains and give you that smooth, fresh feeling.

If you have some catching up to do, you may need a mid-level hygiene appointment to remove tartar that collects due to neglect or from missing dental cleanings.

For our patients with periodontal disease, we offer dental cleanings to help eliminate infection and tartar above and below your gumline. Periodontal disease is a serious condition that can affect your overall health and has been linked to heart disease, stroke, and even low-birth-weight babies.

Periodontal disease is a chronic condition. Our skilled and knowledgeable hygienists will recommend a dental cleaning schedule to keep you healthy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Your teeth are unlike any other part of your body.

While pain is often the first indication that something is wrong in other parts of your body, your teeth may not hurt until something is seriously wrong.

Because the nerve inside your tooth is protected by dentin, a bone-like substance, and completely surrounded by enamel, the hardest substance in your body, dental conditions can often show no painful symptoms until the condition puts your tooth at risk.

Regular dental exams, x-rays, and professional dental cleanings are great ways to insure your smile! If dental conditions do arise, we can often detect them early using a dental exam or digital x-rays. In cases of decay, we can often provide treatment before the risk of tooth loss occurs.

If you wait until you have pain or other symptoms, it may be too late to save your tooth or you could require more complex treatment such as a dental crown instead of a filling, or root canal therapy combined with a dental crown. If we had caught your condition sooner, a simple filling may have done the trick! The only way to diagnose your dental conditions early, when they are easier to treat, is with regular dental exams.
