Custom Take-Home Teeth Whitening Systems

Professional teeth whitening systems provide superior results compared to over-the-counter products. A custom whitening system, created in our Boardman or Columbiana office, includes custom whitening trays and professional strength whitening gel available only from the dentist.

Over-the-counter alternatives do not provide these tools essential for success. Strips and generic trays keep whitening gel where it belongs – on your teeth.

We take impressions to create your whitening trays just for you. We also provide you with enough whitening gel to get the job done! We will discuss how long to wear your whitening trays and the frequency that will give you the best results. You will always achieve better results under the supervision of an experienced dentist.

Typically, you will wear your trays for an hour or two each day for a couple of weeks to reach your maximum results. If you have mild stains, it may take less time. For heavily stained teeth, it can take longer. We will measure your results with a before-and-after shade and photos so you can see your transformation!

You can keep your custom whitening trays to touch up your teeth, as needed. How often this is necessary will depend largely on your lifestyle habits such as coffee consumption and tobacco use as well as your home hygiene habits.

Safety and Side Effects of Teeth Whitening

For most healthy patients, teeth whitening is completely safe. It works by using hydrogen or carbamide peroxide to penetrate the pores of your teeth. Peroxide goes beneath the surface to bleach away deep stains.

The most common side effects of whitening include sensitivity and gum irritation. This often occurs when patients are enthusiastic and use too much whitening gel in their trays. Be sure to follow instructions to avoid this side effect.

You can also skip days between treatments to avoid sensitivity or irritation. When you do have sensitivity, you can take an over-the-counter pain medication to relieve your discomfort. The sensitivity should go away within a day or two.

For patients with gum recession or extreme sensitivity, a fluoride varnish treatment can make teeth whitening more comfortable.
