Root Canal Treatment

People have a lot of misconceptions about root canals. Many patients believe that root canal therapy is a painful experience.

Typically, however, the symptoms leading up to root canal therapy are actually worse than the treatment itself. Root canals allow us to relieve your discomfort and potentially save your tooth.

Why Do I Need a Root Canal?

Your nerve is housed safely inside the inner structure of your tooth. It is surrounded by tissue and the dentin layer of your tooth. Your entire tooth is covered in protective enamel that keeps out bacteria and gives your tooth its strength. Enamel is actually the hardest substance in your body.

When an infection occurs near the nerve in your tooth, the pressure can make it extremely uncomfortable and sensitive to temperature and pressure. This discomfort may even worsen when you lie down to sleep.

To eliminate the infection inside your tooth and relieve your pain, root canal therapy is necessary.

How Root Canal Therapy Works

We use the latest rotary equipment and root canal techniques to give you comfortable and successful results. You can always count on our dentists making sure you feel comfortable for any procedure, including root canal therapy. We will completely anesthetize the area so you don’t feel a thing. In reality, a root canal should feel no different than a common filling.

First, we access your root’s canal to eliminate the infection. Next, our dentist will fill the canal and add medication to prevent re-infection. The next step is sealing your tooth with a temporary filling and giving it time to heal.

We will then wait for your body’s immune system to take over and reduce swelling, allowing your tooth to heal and the infection, pain, and inflammation to subside.

Once healing is complete, usually after a couple of weeks, we will recommend a permanent restoration to give your tooth added support. Root canal teeth are often more brittle because we have eliminated the blood supply to the tooth.

It is normal to feel a little residual sensitivity after root canal therapy. This will go away as your body heals, and within about a week, you should feel completely normal.

Post-Root Canal Restorations

We use a temporary restoration to block out bacteria and seal your tooth until healing is complete. Once we check your tooth and determine that the infection is completely gone, we can discuss a permanent restoration that will work best for you. In many cases, a dental crown will give you the greatest support and longevity for your tooth.

Frequently Asked Questions

No! You will be numb during your root canal so it does not hurt. Many times patients will say the tooth feels instantly better after the procedure once the pressure is relieved.

There are many things that may cause a tooth to need a root canal. Some of the more common causes include teeth that are badly broken down, infected or abscessed teeth, teeth with deep fillings or crowns, teeth that were bumped or knocked out from trauma, cracked teeth, and cysts around teeth.

Root canals are performed by numbing the tooth very well, making a small opening in the top of the tooth, and cleaning out the infected nerve inside of the tooth. The root stays in place and a hollow tube or “canal” is left in the tooth at the end which is then filled with an inert filling material.
